BUCS Canoe Polo 2010
What an eventful weekend! This year saw Loughborough Ladies take the tournament by storm to become BUCS gold medallists after winning every game; they only conceded four goals through the entire weekend thanks to brilliant goal keeping from Alanna and a solid defence. The final saw Loughborough dominate Nottingham winning 5-2, this is a great improvement from last year where our ladies team came 5th.
The Mens A team didn’t get the result they hoped for after the success of recent friendly tournaments only finishing 17th. In the first match against Cambridge A we fought hard with Gallin scoring an early penalty and a brilliant goal through two defenders, but in the end we lost 3-2. This put us in the lower division were we won our second match 4-2 against Newcastle A, but unfortunately then got knocked out in the third match by Aston A after losing 1-0. This meant we were playing for position and the best result we could get was 17th which we did with no problems. Even though we came 17th it’s still an improvement of 5 places from last year’s result of 22nd.

The Mens B team also had a bad start to the tournament losing their first game to ULU 2-1, but they soon made it up hammering Oxford B 10-0, and Cardiff B 2-1. Then it was time to play Nottingham B which after a nail biting extra time, lasting over 10 minutes, with numerous shots from both teams Nottingham managed to secure the golden goal. This meant like the A-team they were playing for position and in the end they managed achieve joint 7th which is again an improvement on last year’s joint 9th.
A big thanks needs to go to Eolie Hampson, Kat Burbeck and Michaela Peters for organising and running this year’s tournament. Also thanks to Ian for helping out with the coaching this year and getting a bit more structure in our sessions. Finally thanks to everyone who helped out across the weekend – setting up at the start, dragging yourselves out of bed to sit on tables or chase up referees, clearing up at the end and especially all the mega phone banter! The weekend would not happen without you and we hope to see you all again next year!!!
