How will pool sessions run within a COVID Secure environment?
For detailed information on how pool sessions will be running, check out our dedicated COVID-19 Information Hub here: COVID HUB
Do I need any prior experience?
Not at all! Our sessions cater for people that have never been in a boat before to people that have lots of experience. Come to a taster session or ask us to join one of our training sessions to try it out
How much is the membership?
A full year membership for the 2021-2022 academic year will be £TBC. This includes EVERYTHING for the year, from all the kit to socials to subsidised trips and tournaments etc.
If you haven't already purchased an Athletic Union (AU) membership you will need to purchase one of these as well to take advantage of this club as it is part of the AU.
The 2020 AU standard membership costs £25 and can be added at checkout. If you have already purchased the AU membership for another AU club you do not need to purchase it again
Is there any requirements for when joining?
We only ask that you can swim 50m unaided in shorts and a t-shirt. You will be asked to show us this before you can take part as a safety precaution
When are the taster sessions?
The taster sessions for October 2021 are:
All taster sessions will be at Loughborough University Swimming Pool (Next to the Loughborough Students union near the main entrance of campus)
You will be asked to meet outside the university swimming pool entrance 15 minutes before the start of the taster session. Taster sessions are COMPLETELY FREE
What times do we train?
We have training in the university swimming pool every Tuesday 8:30pm-10pm and Thursday 8:30pm-10pm. (TBC)
If you have more experience, we do frequent visits to HPP Whitewater centre so just ask the committee and we will be happy to help!
We will be trying to get as many freshers to a whitewater centre as possible. However current guidelines may cause limitations to this
What kit do I need?
The club will provide all the kit you need, such as wetsuits, bouyancy aid, cags, boats, paddles, decks etc. All you really need are clothes and thermals you don't mind getting wet to keep yourself warm when outside on rivers.
If you have your own kit feel free to bring it along - If you have any other kit related questions (such as personal boat storage) just message the Facebook Page and we will happily answer any queries
Do we only compete at BUCS?
No! We do other trips during the year (These vary from year to year) such as the Teifi Tour and NSR, which are extremely fun kayaking and partying competitions throughout the year which don't count for BUCS.
What trips do you do?
We do multiple trips per term including, but not limited to, Freshers Trip, Inter-semester trip, surf trip, NSR, BUCS events, CUCP and more!
Is it only pool session training?
No! We take frequent trips to HPP whitewater centre for paddlers that want to so they can develop their moving water skills. We also have dedicated introduction to Canoe Polo and whitewater sessions throughout the year. Just ask us for any more information
What about COVID-19?
We will only be running pool sessions, socials, events and trips if they are allowed. If they are running, they will be following strict AU, LSU and UK Government guidelines.
Kit will be extensively cleaned and usage will be monitored closely.
Social distancing and face coverings will be mandatory where possible and where it is appropriate.
An internal AU/LSU track and trace system will be in place which will link to the wider NHS track and trace system
